Neuromodulators
Designed to Soften Lines Without Softening Expression
You noticed it in a photograph, or in the mirror under bad lighting. A line between your brows that used to disappear when you stopped frowning, and now doesn’t. The face at rest has started holding onto the expressions it makes all day. You look tired when you are not tired, or stern when you are not. What you want is not a different face. You want this one, rested.
Revive Clinic & IV Therapy approaches neuromodulator treatment conservatively. That means treating the muscles that are actually creating the lines that bother you, at doses matched to your anatomy and how strongly those muscles pull, rather than a standard number of units across a standard set of areas. If additional treatment is needed, it can be addressed at a two-week follow-up. Over-treatment has to wear off with time.
Our Middleburg office serves patients from across western Loudoun County and the surrounding hunt country, including Aldie, Upperville, The Plains, Philomont, Purcellville, Marshall, and Leesburg. Revive is a fee-for-service practice offering both clinical care and aesthetic medicine, which means your treatment is planned by a provider who reviews your broader medical history rather than an intake form.
Every treatment at Revive starts with a conversation, not a syringe. Your provider reads how your face actually moves, how strongly each muscle pulls, what your skin is doing, and what in your health history matters. Then you get a straight answer. Sometimes that answer is a treatment plan. Sometimes it is that a different treatment would serve you better, or that waiting is the smarter move. You will not be sold something you did not come in for.

What Are Neuromodulators?
Neuromodulators are injectable medications that temporarily reduce the activity of specific facial muscles. They work by interrupting the chemical signal that travels from nerve to muscle, so the treated muscle contracts less forcefully. When a muscle pulls less, the skin folding over it creases less, and the lines created by that folding soften over the following days.
This matters because facial lines come in two kinds. Dynamic lines are created by movement, like the crease between your brows when you concentrate or the fan at your outer eye when you smile. Static lines are etched into the skin and visible at rest, the result of years of that folding plus collagen loss and sun exposure. Neuromodulators address the first kind directly. They soften the second kind gradually and partially, by removing the repeated folding that deepens it, but they do not erase it.
The goal is not to stop your face from moving. It is to reduce the pull of the muscles that are working hardest against your skin, so that your face at rest looks like your face at rest.
What Concerns Can Neuromodulators Address?
- Frown lines between the eyebrows
- Horizontal forehead lines
- Lines at the outer corners of the eyes
- Fine lines across the bridge of the nose
- Vertical lines above the lip
- Dimpling or texture across the chin
- A downturned appearance at the corners of the mouth
- Brow position that reads heavy or tired
- Visible vertical bands in the neck
Treatment Areas
- Between the brows The muscles that draw the eyebrows together produce the vertical lines most patients notice first. This is among the most commonly treated areas and one of the most predictable.
- Forehead The muscle that lifts the brows creates horizontal lines. This area requires judgment, because the same muscle holds the brow up. Treating it too aggressively drops the brow and makes the eyes look heavier, which is the opposite of the intended result.
- Outer corners of the eyes Treatment softens the lines that fan outward when you smile. Some movement here is desirable, and complete stillness looks wrong.
- Bridge of the nose The lines that appear across the nose when you scrunch or squint.
- Upper lip Small doses can soften vertical lip lines or slightly relax the upper lip so more of it shows when you smile. This area is sensitive to dosing and affects speech and drinking if overtreated.
- Chin Treatment can smooth a pebbled or dimpled chin surface caused by muscle activity.
- Corners of the mouth The muscle that pulls the mouth corners downward can be relaxed to reduce a permanently displeased resting expression.
- Neck Vertical bands in the neck can be softened, though results here are more modest than patients often expect.
Not every area is appropriate for every patient. Muscle strength, brow position, eyelid anatomy, and prior treatment history all affect what can be treated safely and what result is realistic.
Benefits of Neuromodulator Treatment
- Softens the appearance of lines produced by facial movement
- Non-surgical, with no incisions and no general anesthesia
- Treatment typically takes 10 to 20 minutes
- Most patients return to normal activity the same day
- Effects are temporary, so an unwanted result resolves rather than persisting
- Can be adjusted at follow-up and refined across treatments as your provider learns how your muscles respond
- Works alongside skin treatments that address texture, tone, and volume
What Patients Often Notice
- A smoother forehead and brow at rest
- Less shadowing between the brows
- Softer lines at the outer eyes when smiling
- An expression that reads more rested rather than tense or tired
- In some cases, a slight lift or opening at the brow
Results vary. Muscle strength, skin quality, age, prior treatment, how deeply lines are already etched, and individual metabolism all affect both the degree of change and how long it lasts. Some patients notice a substantial difference. Some notice a subtle one. Patients with deep static lines often find that movement-related creasing improves while the etched line remains partly visible, and that further improvement comes only with repeated treatment over time or with the addition of a treatment that addresses the skin itself.
Treatment Timeline
- Treatment time
Most appointments take 10 to 20 minutes depending on how many areas are treated.
- Onset
Softening usually begins within 3 to 5 days.
- Full effect
The complete result is generally visible at 10 to 14 days. This is when your provider can assess accurately and make adjustments, which is why a follow-up is worth attending even when you are pleased.
- Duration
Effects typically last 3 to 4 months. Some patients see less time, particularly with strong muscles, high metabolic rates, frequent intense exercise, or when doses are kept deliberately light. Duration is not a fixed number and can vary between your own treatments
- Return of movement
Muscle activity returns gradually rather than all at once. Lines reappear as it does.
What Happens During Treatment
- Consultation
Your provider reviews your medical history, medications and supplements, allergies, prior aesthetic treatments, and any history of adverse reactions. They watch your face move, at rest, animated, and through specific expressions, because muscle strength and pull pattern cannot be assessed any other way. They assess brow position and eyelid anatomy, since these determine whether forehead treatment is safe for you and at what dose.
Not every patient is a candidate. Certain medical conditions, medications, and circumstances make treatment inadvisable, and your provider will review all of them with you before anything is scheduled. Bring a complete list of your medications and supplements. If you are not a candidate, you will be told why, and your provider will discuss what else may help.
- Preparation
The treatment areas are cleansed. Your provider marks injection points while you make specific expressions, so placement follows your muscle anatomy rather than a diagram. Topical numbing is available but most patients find it unnecessary, as the needles are very fine and each injection takes a moment. Ice may be used for comfort.
Tell your provider if you take blood thinners or anti-inflammatory medications, or if you have been drinking alcohol, as these increase the likelihood of bruising.
- Treatment
Your provider injects small amounts of medication into the targeted muscles. Most patients describe a brief pinch or sting. There is no sedation and you remain fully alert.
The number of injection points and the dose at each depends on your muscle strength, the areas being treated, and your treatment goals. Placement and depth matter considerably. Injecting too close to certain structures, or allowing product to spread beyond the intended muscle, is what produces droop and asymmetry. Anatomical knowledge and technique reduce these risks substantially but do not remove them.
- Aftercare Guidance
Stay upright for four hours after treatment. Avoid rubbing, massaging, or applying pressure to the treated areas for 24 hours, including facial treatments and sleeping face-down. Avoid strenuous exercise, hot tubs, and saunas for 24 hours. Normal facial expression is fine and may even help.
Mild redness, small bumps at injection sites, and tenderness usually resolve within a few hours. Bruising, when it occurs, may take several days to a week. Headache in the first day or two is common and generally mild.
You will receive written aftercare instructions at your appointment. Contact Revive Clinic & IV Therapy if anything concerns you in the days following treatment, or if you have questions about what you are seeing.
How Much Does Neuromodulator Treatment Cost?
Pricing depends on how many areas are treated and how much product your muscles require, which varies considerably between patients. Someone with strong glabellar muscles needs more than someone with mild movement to achieve a comparable result, and neither is a better candidate than the other.
For this reason, Revive Clinic & IV Therapy determines pricing during your consultation, after your provider has evaluated what you actually need. You will know the cost before any treatment is performed, and you are free to decline.
Your first consultation is complimentary for new patients.
First Time Considering Neuromodulators?
Most people considering treatment for the first time have two worries: that it will be obvious, and that it will be permanent if they dislike it.
Neither concern is unreasonable, and both are manageable. An obvious result comes from treating too many muscles too heavily, and it is avoidable by starting conservatively. Your provider can always add product at your two-week follow-up. Nothing can be taken back out. Beginning lighter than you think you need is the approach that consistently produces results people are happy with.
The second concern resolves itself. Neuromodulators wear off. If you dislike the result, it is temporary, measured in months rather than permanently altering your face.
At your consultation your provider will review your facial movement and anatomy, your medical history and medications, what specifically bothers you, and what is realistic. You will discuss which areas would benefit most, what degree of change to expect, how long it will last, whether a different treatment would serve your concern better, and what a first treatment should look like. Many first-time patients are treated in one or two areas rather than everything at once.
Maintaining Your Results
Neuromodulator results are temporary by design. Maintaining them means repeating treatment, generally every 3 to 4 months, though your provider may recommend a different interval based on how you responded.
Some patients find that consistent treatment over time allows slightly longer intervals, as muscles treated regularly may become less forceful. This is not universal and should not be promised.
Treating too frequently is not advisable. Your provider will give you a minimum interval and it is worth respecting.
Neuromodulators hold movement-related lines in check, and the skin itself continues to change underneath. Collagen declines, volume shifts, and sun exposure accumulates regardless of how consistently you treat. Patients who plan for this tend to be happiest over the long run, which is why your provider may recommend pairing your maintenance schedule with microneedling for collagen, RF skin tightening for early laxity, or a peel to address tone. Daily broad-spectrum sun protection does more for long-term skin quality than any injectable, and it costs nothing but consistency.
Why Choose Revive Clinic & IV Therapy?
Revive Clinic & IV Therapy is a nurse-practitioner-led practice. Dr. Gurpreet Bajwa, DNP, FNP-BC, is a board-certified family nurse practitioner who spent more than a decade in urgent care in Ashburn before founding Revive, and who has worked closely with dermatology, endocrinology, and internal medicine. Dr. Bajwa holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree and practices under a collaborative practice agreement with a physician, as Virginia requires.
That clinical background shapes how aesthetic treatment is handled here. Your medical history is reviewed the way a medical history should be reviewed. Medication interactions are checked. If something in your history makes treatment inadvisable, you will be told.
Treatment planning is conservative and specific to your anatomy. Follow-up is part of the process rather than an upsell. And because Revive is a fee-for-service practice, there is no incentive structure pushing you toward more treatment than you came for.
We are not here to erase the way your face moves. We are here to soften what movement has left behind, and to leave the rest of your expression where you put it.
Enhance Your Experience
Neuromodulators address one specific thing: lines created by muscle movement. Patients whose goals extend beyond that often combine treatment with services that address what neuromodulators cannot.
- Dermal fillers for volume loss in the cheeks, temples, and lower face, and for lines that remain visible at rest
- Microneedling for skin texture, fine lines, pore appearance, and scarring
- Chemical peels for tone, surface pigmentation, and dullness
- RF skin tightening for early to moderate skin laxity that neuromodulators do not affect
Each recommendation is made individually during your consultation. Not every service is appropriate for every patient, some cannot be performed on the same day as neuromodulator treatment, and results vary. Your provider will advise on sequencing and timing.
Let's Talk About the Result You Want
You already have a picture in your head of what you are after. Maybe it is a forehead that looks smooth in photographs instead of creased. Maybe it is the line between your brows that makes you look irritated in meetings when you are only concentrating. Maybe it is less specific than that, and you simply want to look as rested as you actually feel.
Bring that to your consultation and say it plainly. The clearer you are about the outcome you want, the more precisely your provider can plan for it, and the more honestly they can tell you what is realistic, what will take more than one treatment, and where a different approach would serve you better. The patients who end up happiest are almost always the ones who described the result they wanted rather than asking for a number of units.
Your first consultation is complimentary. You will leave knowing what is achievable for your face, what it will take to get there, and what it will cost, before you commit to anything.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are neuromodulators?
Neuromodulators are injectable medications that temporarily reduce the activity of specific facial muscles by interrupting the signal between nerve and muscle. The treated muscle contracts less forcefully, so the skin over it creases less, and lines created by that repeated creasing soften. They are used to address lines caused by facial movement rather than lines caused by volume loss or skin damage.
Will I look frozen?
A frozen appearance is the result of overtreatment, not of neuromodulators themselves. It happens when too many muscles are treated too heavily, particularly across the forehead. Revive’s approach is to treat conservatively and add at follow-up if more is needed, because product can be added and cannot be removed. Tell your provider directly how much movement you want to keep. Some patients want minimal movement in a specific area, and that is a legitimate preference. It should be a decision rather than an accident.
Does it hurt?
Most patients describe a brief pinch. The needles are very fine and each injection takes a second or two. Topical numbing is available. Most patients find the treatment easier than they expected.
How long until I see results?
Softening usually begins at 3 to 5 days, with the full effect at 10 to 14 days.
How long do results last?
Typically 3 to 4 months, though this varies with muscle strength, dose, metabolism, and activity level.
Is there downtime?
Most patients return to normal activity immediately. Avoid strenuous exercise, lying flat, and rubbing the treated areas for the first 24 hours. Small bumps at injection sites settle within a few hours. Bruising is possible and may last several days.
Can I have this if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. Safety has not been established in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and treatment is not performed in either circumstance.
Can neuromodulators be combined with other treatments?
Often, yes, though timing matters. Some treatments should not be performed on the same day. Your provider will sequence your plan.
What if I do not like the result?
The effect is temporary and resolves over several months. Minor asymmetry can sometimes be corrected with a small additional dose at follow-up. Tell your provider either way, since it informs how you are treated next time.
What happens if I stop?
Muscle movement returns gradually and lines return to their prior appearance. Stopping does not make lines worse than they were.
Am I a good candidate?
That depends on your facial anatomy, muscle strength, medical history, medications, and what you are hoping to change. Your consultation exists to answer this question honestly. Please review the medical disclaimer below for circumstances in which treatment is not appropriate.

Regulatory status. Neuromodulators used in aesthetic practice are FDA-approved for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows, lines at the outer corners of the eyes, and forehead lines in adults. Several other facial areas described on this page are treated routinely in aesthetic practice and are supported by clinical experience, but their use is considered off-label. Your provider will discuss which category applies to your treatment plan.
Who is not a candidate. Neuromodulator treatment is not appropriate for individuals with certain neuromuscular disorders, including myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, as these conditions may amplify the effect of the medication unpredictably. Treatment is also not appropriate with an active skin infection at the intended injection site, with a known allergy to any component of the medication, or during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as safety has not been established in these circumstances. Existing significant drooping of the brow or eyelid may make treatment of certain areas inadvisable. Certain medications, including some antibiotics and muscle relaxants, may interact with neuromodulators and must be disclosed before treatment. Candidacy is determined only after individual evaluation by a qualified healthcare provider.
Risks. Neuromodulator treatment is a medical procedure with associated risks. Common effects include redness, swelling, tenderness, and small bumps at injection sites, bruising, and headache. Additional risks include temporary drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow, facial asymmetry, an uneven or unintended appearance, dry eye or excessive tearing, and spread of the medication’s effect to muscles beyond the intended treatment area, which may cause weakness in nearby muscles. Injections near the mouth may temporarily affect speech, drinking, or the ability to form certain expressions. Infection at an injection site is possible. Allergic reactions may occur and, though rare, can be serious.
Effects involving difficulty swallowing, speaking, or breathing require immediate medical attention.
Results. Results are temporary and vary between individuals. No specific outcome, degree of improvement, or duration of effect can be guaranteed.
